This accredited Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) in Western Australia will provide the necessary skills for planning, coordinating, executing, and finalizing the construction of medium-rise buildings. 

The construction industry is expected to grow by 10.6% in 2022, creating more than 1.2 million new jobs across all sections of the industry. The course is ideal for those who have worked in building and construction and are looking to move into planning and management roles.

This course is delivered online and can be completed within a maximum of 24 months. 

The potential career outcomes include a builder and construction manager. Students will learn about interpreting plans and specifications, managing workplace health and safety, writing tenders, and project management.

Prerequisite & Entry Criteria

Entry to the course requires the successful completion of English to Year 10 level.

If you haven’t successfully completed English at Year 10 level, you can demonstrate equivalency through one of the following:

  • Successful completion of a Nationally Recognized Training qualification at Certificate III level or higher; or
  • 3 years relevant industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication

There are no formal education entry requirements for this course.

Minimum age

You will need to be at least 18 years old.

Computing

All users:

  • Microsoft Office 2010 or equivalent
  • Adobe Reader XI or equivalent
  • Printer and associated software
  • Scanner and associated software
  • File compression software
  • Digital audio or video recording capability
  • Adobe Flash Player 10 or higher
  • Telephone
  • Calculator
  • Photocopier (this could be a feature of printer/scanner).

Digital equipment

You will need access to:

  • A digital video recording device and/or a digital camera and associated software to save and upload video, image and audio files to OpenSpace. 
  • Software to view online videos and images. Software such as Adobe Reader, Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer etc. 

Practical task

You will be asked to complete specific tasks outlined in the assessments. 

The work-based project should be at:

A construction site (see under ‘White card’ on this page for more information). 

The licensed builder that you use will need to have the following tools on-site:

  • Hand saw
  • Hand plane
  • Chisels
  • Electric plane
  • Electric drill
  • Circular saw
  • Nail gun
  • Air compressor
