If you are looking to become a Dental Assistant, the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting by Foundation Education will provide you with the knowledge and skills required. Various specialisation options are available to meet your needs.

At the completion of this course, you will be issued with an HLT45015 Certificate IV in Dental Assisting by Foundation Education (RTO: 22557).

There is a work placement requirement for this course. Students need to gain access to a dental practice and a qualified supervisor i.e. a person who holds Certificate IV in Dental Assisting or a higher relevant qualification. The institution can assist you in organising this.

Students may need to undertake a Working with Children check to meet individual work placement employer requirements.

Prerequisite & Entry Criteria

  • Parent or Guardian approval for students under the age of 18
  • Permanent Australian Resident or equivalent
  • Mandatory work placement
  • Computer: Laptop or desktop computer with working speakers or headphone points
  • Internet: High-speed internet such as Broadband or ADSL, T1/T2, fibre optic (Dial-up access is not recommended)
  • Windows: Operating system – Windows 8 or above
  • Internet Browser: Google Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer 11
  • MAC: Operating system – OS X 10.14 Mojave or later
  • Software: Flash, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word (or Open Office which is free to download)


Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be available.

CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people
CHCCOM005 – Communicate and work in health or community services
HLTDEN002 – Assist with dental radiography
HLTINF003 – Implement and monitor infection prevention and control policies and procedures
HLTWHS003 – Maintain work health and safety
* HLTAID003 – Provide first aid

Radiography specialisation:

HLTDEN007 – Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice
HLTDEN008 – Prepare to expose a prescribed dental radiographic image

HLTDEN004 – Implement an individualised oral hygiene program
HLTDEN010 – Implement an oral hygiene program for older people
